I am currently researching and writing a new novel, which will be a big departure for me, as it is neither gothic nor eighteenth century. The novel is set both in the 1930s and early 1990s, and around one of the lidos, or open-air swimming pools, that became fashionable in Britain in the late 1930s. Many of these lidos were closed during the 199os due to ‘asset-stripping’ by local councils. The themes of the novel will be how community, memory and friendship are strengthened when the swimming pool is faced with closure.
